James is a Senior Lecturer at Massey University’s Business School (Palmerston North) and a credentialled and practising company director. He teaches and researches in strategic management and corporate governance, and is responsible for the delivery of the College’s business internship and professional practice (Management) courses. He has designed and delivered corporate governance development programmes for a wide range of organisations from what was CCMAU (now Treasury, for SOE directors); corporates including Fonterra; and, smaller organisations, such as Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa (Māori Medical Practitioners Assoc.) and Te Ataarangi. James’s governance experience has been gained across both the public and private sectors, including Greenlea where he chaired the Audit Committee; Vision Manawatu (incl. 4 years as chair); and, T H Enterprises Limited (also as chair). He currently holds two directorships and is on the Defence Employers Support Council.

James holds a Master of Agricultural Science (Honours) in Farm Management from Massey University; a Doctor of Philosophy in International Business from the University of Auckland; and, is a graduate from the Canadian Militia Command and Staff College at Fort Frontenac, Ontario (awarded the title pmsc). James is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand and a member of the Academy of Management, Pace University, New York.

He spent 12 years as an Officer in the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (Territorial Force) and excelled in light infantry being awarded the Charles Upham Sword of Honour at Officer Cadet School (Waiouru), and topping the class at Staff College. He spent time in the jungle, the desert and the mountains, and instructed at Tactical School. Beyond work, James farms with his family north of Feilding in the Manawatu where he upholds his passion for ‘hard yakka’, through fencing and shearing. James, and his wife Caroline have three teenage children.
